Load Shedding Explained

Load shedding is initiated by the national electricity market operator, NEMMCO, who instructs the relevant distribution or transmission companies. These instructions normally occur with little or no notice, but when possible, we advise customers who will be affected through emergency radio announcements.

During load shedding our priorities are public safety, minimising economic impact, and fairly sharing the burden. A more detailed description of how load shedding is managed at the distribution level is available through our Fact Sheet - Load Shedding Explained.
