Planting Trees Near Power Lines

27 February 2009

Trees and vegetation contacting power lines can be a dangerous fire risk, as well as a common cause of electricity supply interruptions. As a result, tall trees growing under or near power lines require regular trimming, which can look unsightly and be detrimental to tree health.

CitiPower and Powercor support the planting of species that will enhance Victorian gardens and avoid the need for trimming or removal of trees once they reach maturity. An attractive garden or yard that doesn't come into contact with electrical infrastructure isn't hard to achieve with a little careful planning at the planting stage.

To assist with planting on your rural property or in a home garden, CitiPower and Powercor offer a Guide to Planting Trees Near Power Lines.

This practical guide, along with information from your local council or indigenous plant nursery, will help you choose plants that suit your garden and the surrounding environment. Also included in the guide are safe planting tips, and a register of suggested native species specific to each region in Victoria.
